As we begin our fifth decade, we face unprecedented challenges.
The troubled economy means that our generous scholarship programs are needed more than ever. At the 2011 workshops, more than half of our participants received financial aid in order to be able to attend.
This year, the company controlling the Squaw Valley ski resort was sold to a large corporation, bringing to an end 40 years of very low rent for our summertime workshop spaces. For the first time in our history, we are having to pay market rates for these venues, and there are serious questions about whether we can afford to stay in our current home.
We have an urgent need to secure physical space for our summer workshops, to build our Scholarship Fund, and to absorb dramatic increases in the costs of staging our programs.
General Fund Needs:
- Keep tuition and housing reasonable for all participants
- Secure our facilities in Squaw Valley
- Increase our capacity to support alumni
Student Scholarships Needs:
- Increase our annual gifts to deserving writers and poets, with funds available for tuition, housing, and travel
- Admit the most qualified and diverse participants in the country regardless of ability to pay.
